He came through the back roads.
Through the strange machinery of American music, where beautiful work gets made in dangerous rooms and then fed to lawyers, managers, record companies, promoters, addicts, cowboys, cowards, geniuses, thieves, believers, accountants, and the occasional true friend still standing in the smoke of it all.
He was a founding member of The Black Crowes and a member of the legendary Hall of Fame band Lynyrd Skynyrd, a CNN journalist and producer, a trustee and chapter president of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences — the organization behind the Grammy Awards — an early investor and advisor in Laird Superfood, co-founder and co-owner of Avatar Events Group, a real estate developer with deep experience converting obsolete industrial spaces into loft office and mixed-use live-work properties, co-founder of Zeno Capitol and a working advisor to artists, founders, owners, operators, and complicated people in complicated moments.
But the résumé is not the point. A résumé never pulled anybody out of a ditch. It never walked into a bloated room, pulled the fire alarm on the way to the exit, made the hard call, or kept the beautiful work alive while the machinery around it tried to eat itself.
